E-mail Setup

NOTE: If you have a previous or existing e-mail account with the same domain as your new/updated Google Apps account, please delete the old data by removing it - or by wiping the phone completely. If you do not know how to wipe your phone data, please contact your carrier's technical support department.

Note: While setup instructions are provided below, Gmail IMAP access is not officially supported for BlackBerry devices at this time.

To set up the BlackBerry's email client with Google Apps email (IMAP), just follow these steps:

  1. Login to your Google Apps account, GMail -> Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP
  2. Enable IMAP
  3. Disable POP
  4. Save Changes
  5. On your BlackBerry device, navigate to your home screen
  6. Select the icon that lets you set up email (this can be called SetupSetup WizardEmail SetupBlackBerry Set-upE-mail settings, or Personal Email Set-up)
  7. Follow the setup instructions provided on your device to create a new e-mail account
  8. IMPORTANT: When prompted for e-mail type, DO NOT SELECT GMail - Select "Other"
  9. Be sure to enter the following:
    • Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
    • Username: [your full Google Apps email address]
    • Password: [your Google Apps password]
    • IMAP Port: 993
  10. Allow the system to add your account, but do not enter your Google Apps password into the utility boxes (this can cause the system to default to POP3 instead of IMAP)
  11. Select Next
  12. Select Next again (bypassing the 'Additional Information Required' section)
  13. Select your account type, then select Next
You may encounter a 'We were unable to configure...' error. Select I will provide the settings to continue
  14. Select the option that mentions 'IMAP/POP'
  15. Select I will provide the settings..., then select Next
  16. Select Set up existing email account...
  17. Enter your Google Apps account information here, with 'imap.gmail.com' as your mail server
  18. Select Next
  19. Select Save

If setup is successful, you should receive a confirmation message and a new mailbox icon should appear on your device's home screen, labeled with your Google Apps email address.

If you encounter a problem during setup, please make sure you have enabled IMAP in your main Google Apps Mail settings.

Calendar/Contact Sync Setup

  • Start by browsing on your Blackberry to: http://m.google.com/sync
  • Download and Install "Google Sync"
  • Once download is complete, select "Run"
  • Login using your full Google Apps e-mail address and password
  • Setup the sync to run automatically, select your contacts/calendar to sync
  • Click the "Back" button and Save, then click Sync Now

If you were already setup using BES (instead of BIS), you will need to wipe (security wipe) the device before trying to sync.
